GENEVA — A senior Red Crescent official says Moammar Gadhafi’s soldiers are blocking migrant workers from crossing into Tunisia, and forcing many to return to work in the Libyan capital, Tripoli.

Ibrahim Osman of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said Tuesday about 30,000 migrant workers were rounded up and held in Libyan immigration buildings near the Tunisian border last week.

He said Gadhafi soldiers “pulled back” 30,000 Bangladeshis, Egyptians and sub-Saharan Africans from the Ras Ajdir border crossing after a pro-government demonstration at the crossing and they appear to have been forcibly returned to service jobs.

The U.N. refugee agency expressed alarm Tuesday at what it called rising violence by armed Libyans against sub-Saharan Africans.
