Mumbai: Under investigation for black money and multiple accounts in tax havens for four years now, Hasan Ali Khan, India‘s top tax defaulter is finally behind bars. Hasan Ali will spend atleast the next 24 hours in the Enforcement Directorate‘s (ED) custody.Accompanied by an ED official, the billionaire defaulter was first being driven from his house in Pune in his Mercedes to his Peddar Road residence in Mumbai. His premises were then checked and his bank locker searched. And when produced in court, Hasan Ali pleaded that he be allowed to stay at the JJ hospital. He was suffering, he claimed, from hypertension and kidney trouble.

The medical examination showed that this was a made up story to evade the lockup. But Hasan Ali used the trip to the hospital to play victim.

While the drama played out in Mumbai, in New Delhi, the Supreme Court critisised the investigating agency.

The court asked if terror charges could be slapped on Hasan Ali, given that a part of the alleged black money had come from arms deals. The Government said it was contemplating framing MACOCA charges against him.

The Centre also assured the court that the Director ED was personally supervising the case and a report will filed in the next 10 days.

The ED had been dragging its feet for four years now on the Hasan Ali case, and has taken political pressure from the Opposition on the issue of black money, coupled with the judicial intervention to bolt the mystery millionaire and top tax evader.
