SRINAGAR: A top Jaishe Mohammad (JeM) commander was gunned down along with an associate in a brief encounter with Indian police in the outskirts of Kashmiri capital Srinagar this afternoon.

A senior police officer said cops intercepted a light motor vehicle in which the two fighters were traveling on the shores of the world-famous Dal Lake on Thursday afternoon triggering an encounter.

“The encounter was brief in which the chief commander of the Jaishe Mohammad outfit Sajad Afghani and his bodyguard were killed,” the officer said.

“It is a major success,” he said.

A police spokesman said the JeM commander was involved in many attacks on security forces and had also masterminded the Qamarwari attack in capital Srinagar early this year.

The spokesman said Sajad Afghani was also ‘actively perusing the re-grouping of Jaish Mohammad militants in north Kashmir and was active in many areas there and had of late shifted to Srinagar’.

Meanwhile three children were seriously wounded in the morning as they played with an unexploded shell they had found in the vicinity of their home in village Margi Devar in frontier Kupwara district, 110 kms north of capital Srinagar.

“The siblings had to be evacuated to capital Srinagar for specialized treatment as their condition deteriorated,” police said.

The shell exploded inside the house as the children played with it.
